Water is one of India's most critical natural resources and a key enabler of economic growth, environmental sustainability and social well-being. Rapid urbanisation, industrialisation, population growth and climate change are placing increasing pressure on the country's finite freshwater resources, making efficient water management an imperative for sustainable development. Addressing challenges related to water availability, quality, efficiency and resilience requires collective action from government, industry, academia and communities.
The CII-Triveni Water Institute (CII-TWI), one of the Confederation of Indian Industry's Centres of Excellence, was established to promote integrated and sustainable water resource management across the country. Headquartered in Gurugram, with regional outreach across India, the Institute serves as a national platform for policy advocacy, technical excellence, capacity building, research and multi-stakeholder collaboration to advance responsible water stewardship.
CII-TWI works closely with Central and State Governments, industries, utilities, research institutions, development agencies and local communities to develop practical, scalable and sustainable solutions for water conservation, water-use efficiency, wastewater management, reuse and recycling, groundwater sustainability, watershed management and climate-resilient water systems. Through advisory services, benchmarking, assessments, training programmes and demonstration projects, the Institute supports organisations in improving water performance while contributing to national water security goals.
The Institute's key areas of focus include:
- Promoting integrated water resource management and sustainable water stewardship across industries and communities.
- Enhancing water-use efficiency through adoption of best practices, advanced technologies and innovation.
- Encouraging wastewater treatment, recycling, reuse and circular water management to reduce freshwater dependency.
- Supporting groundwater recharge, watershed development and rainwater harvesting initiatives.
- Strengthening industrial water sustainability through assessments, benchmarking, audits and implementation support.
- Building capacity through training, certification programmes, knowledge sharing and awareness initiatives.
- Facilitating policy dialogue and industry-government collaboration on emerging water challenges and regulatory frameworks.
- Advancing climate-resilient water management strategies that improve resilience to droughts, floods and other climate-related risks.
- Promoting partnerships aligned with national priorities and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 6 on Clean Water and Sanitation.
By fostering innovation, collaboration and responsible water stewardship, CII-Triveni Water Institute is committed to enabling a water-secure, climate-resilient and sustainable future for India, where efficient management of water resources supports economic growth, environmental conservation and improved quality of life.
